A Matrigma test is a pre-employment assessment developed by Swedish test publisher Assessio. It is used by employers on an international scale, and considered a reliable predictor of learning potential and future job performance.

Prepare yourself for leading employers

The Classic Matrigma test vs the Adaptive Matrigma test

Employers may choose to use one of two versions of the Matrigma test: the Classic or the Adaptive. While question content is the same for both, there are differences in format that set them apart.

The Classic Matrigma allows candidates 40 minutes to work through as many of its 35 questions as they can. Problems are pulled at random from an extensive question bank, but typically get harder as you progress.

The Adaptive Matrigma is a 12-minute version of the test. It includes a maximum time allowance of one minute per question. If you answer correctly, you’ll be given a harder question. If you answer incorrectly, you’ll be given an easier problem to solve.

The number of questions you’ll face will depend on how quickly you work. Due to its time restriction and adaptive nature, this is generally considered the more difficult of the two.

Tips on how to prepare for and pass Matrigma tests

1. Practice abstract reasoning

To familiarise yourself with the various rules of logic – and to get better at spotting them – be sure to take plenty of practice abstract reasoning tests. Once you’re comfortable with the question format, place yourself under timed conditions to build on your speed.

2. Use a process of elimination

For each question, you’ll have six answer options. If you’re struggling, it’s useful to narrow down those options by eliminating any that aren’t plausible. When left with just two or three, you’ll find it easier to grasp the logic of the matrix.

Make mastering this technique a part of your practice process.

3. Answer every question

You won’t lose any marks for an incorrect answer, so instead of skipping a difficult question, take an educated guess. Again, use a process of elimination to boost your chances of guessing correctly.

4. Keep a calm head

It’s easier said than done under test conditions, but try to stay calm. Stress will cloud your head and impact your reasoning ability. If you’ve put in plenty of practice you’ve done all you can, so just take it one question at a time.

Matrigma Tests Tips

1Understand the Matrigma Format

Before you can ace a Matrigma test, you’ve got to know what you’re up against. This isn’t your standard knowledge quiz. Matrigma tests your raw problem-solving abilities, requiring you to find patterns and solve puzzles without any prior knowledge of the material. Spend some time on Practice Aptitude Tests getting comfy with the types of questions you might face so there are no surprises on test day.

2Focus on Your Problem-Solving Skills

Since the test measures your cognitive ability, boosting your problem-solving skills is key. You’re going into mental gymnastics here! Make sure to engage in exercises and games that challenge your critical thinking and pattern recognition. On Practice Aptitude Tests, you’ll find plenty of brain teasers that will get those cognitive wheels turning and prepare you for the real deal.

3Simulate Test Conditions

Practice makes perfect, right? But here’s the catch - you’ve got to simulate the conditions of the actual test. That means opting for timed sessions that mimic the pressure of the real Matrigma test. With Practice Aptitude Tests, you can take practice tests that emulate the exact conditions you’ll face, giving you a real sense of how to pace yourself.

4Review and Learn from Your Mistakes

We learn more from failures than from success, so embrace those mistakes. After completing practice tests on Practice Aptitude Tests, take the time to go through each wrong answer to understand where and why you slipped up. It’s not just about getting it right; it’s about knowing why something is right or wrong. This insight is invaluable for your test day success!

5Stay Calm and Manage Stress

Nerves can wreak havoc on your test performance, so it’s crucial to find ways to keep calm. Practicing regularly on Practice Aptitude Tests can build confidence. Additionally, mindfulness or breathing exercises can help manage stress levels and keep your mind clear when you’re tackling those tricky problems. Remember, a relaxed mind is a more efficient problem-solving machine!

Matrigma Tests FAQs

How are Matrigma tests scored?

The results of your Matrigma test will rank your performance against a normative group. You’ll be placed in either the low, average or high bracket, and your score report will show where you sit on a bell curve.

This gives your prospective employer insight into your abilities compared to others from a similar background.

Are Matrigma tests difficult?

If you’re unfamiliar with the question format used, a Matrigma test can certainly be a challenge, particularly the adaptive version where you’re working under strict time pressure. Remember though that this is an ability test and with practice you can develop your skills.

How long is a Matrigma test?

This depends on the version of the test you’re required to take. The Classic version is 40 minutes long, and you can work through at your own pace. The Adaptive version is short at just 12 minutes, but you must answer each question within a one-minute time frame.

How are Matrigma tests different from Raven's Matrices?

The Matrigma test was designed as an alternative to Raven’s Matrices. It is based on the same principles, but makes use of more graphical elements that can produce a broader range of challenging questions.
