The CCAT is a test that is used as a pre-employment aptitude assessment, usually in roles that need critical thinking and problem solving. It is a respected test that does not require any previous knowledge, yet is seen as a reliable indicator of future performance.

Prepare yourself for leading employers

Tips on how to prepare for and pass CCATs

1) Know your strengths

The questions on the CCAT are a mix of subjects throughout. You’ll be better at some subjects than others – you might have better aptitude for language so perform better in the verbal section, or you may be quick at arithmetic so find the math and logic questions easier.

Whichever is your strength, play to it. There are no penalties for a wrong answer, so when time is not on your side (as is the challenge in the CCAT) it is preferable to get an answer down – even if it is a guess. Getting through the questions that you are less sure on so that you can answer the ones that you find easier is a good strategy.

2) Practice

You can improve your performance on the CCAT by practicing sample questions. This will help you become familiar with the layout and wording of the assessment, and will give you a good indication of where your weaknesses lie.

Although you might want to play to your strengths as in the tip above, working on your weaker areas can only improve your overall score.

3) Prepare

Any online (or in-person) assessment needs preparation. For the CCAT, usually delivered online, you need to get yourself into the ‘test mentality’.

Get a good night’s sleep, eat well and stay hydrated. Choose an area to take the test where you won’t be disturbed, and make sure that you have a reliable internet connection to minimise distractions.

You have not got much time in this test, so any wasted moments can seriously impact your performance.

4) Read the instructions

At the beginning of the test you will have a set of instructions, telling you how to complete the test properly. This part of the test is not timed, so take the time to make sure that you fully understand how to answer, how to move on to the next question, and any other information that is provided.

Reading the instructions with care will also help to reduce your initial anxiety as you begin the test.

5) Manage your time

Fifteen minutes is not a lot of time to answer 50 questions; according to Criteria Corp, less than 1% of test-takers manage to answer all of them.

With such a short time frame, you cannot afford to hesitate – so if you cannot quickly come up with an answer, make a guess and then move on. Less than 18 seconds per question means that the faster you are, the better you will perform.

CCAT Tests Tips

1Get Familiar with the CCAT Format

Before diving into practice, it’s crucial to understand what you’re up against. The CCAT is known for assessing critical thinking and problem-solving skills without demanding any prior specific knowledge. Familiarize yourself with the types of questions you’ll face so you won’t be caught off guard during the actual test.

2Simulate Testing Conditions

To get the best practice experience, replicate the conditions of the real CCAT test. Find a quiet place where you can concentrate, set a timer, and try to work through practice tests without interruptions. The more it feels like the real thing, the better prepared you’ll be when it counts.

3Focus on Your Weak Points

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. After your initial practice tests on Practice Aptitude Tests, identify the areas where you struggle the most. Honing in on these topics will help you improve where it matters most and boost your overall score.

4Time Management is Key

The CCAT is not only about getting the right answers but also about doing it efficiently. Work on pacing yourself to ensure that you can answer as many questions as possible within the allotted time. Remember, unanswered questions can’t earn you any points.

5Stay Calm and Confident

Test anxiety can throw a wrench in your performance. Practice stress-reduction techniques like deep breathing or positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you’ve prepared well and that Practice Aptitude Tests has given you the tools to tackle the CCAT with confidence.

CCAT Tests FAQs

How are CCAT tests scored?

CCATs are scored as one point for each correct answer. This is presented to the recruiter in two ways: as a raw score (x out of 50) and as a percentile (for example, 55%). The percentile shows your relative performance compared to other test-takers; so if you score 55%, you have performed better than 55% of people who have taken the test.

What is a good CCAT score?

The definition of a ‘good’ CCAT score is a difficult one, considering the statistics around completion. In most cases, the recruiter will have a defined percentile that needs to be reached and that will differ between roles.

How many questions are answered on average in the CCAT?

According to Criteria Corp, the average number of answered questions is 24. This demonstrates just how much time pressure is added to the assessment, and shows that success can come even if you don’t answer all the questions – although you can help yourself by answering as many as possible.

How can I practice CCAT tests?

There are many practice assessments online that give great preparation for questions on verbal reasoning and spatial awareness as well as math and logic, but the best way to prepare is with a specific CCAT prep pack or practice test.
